Take it There
By Kaira Denee
Kaira’s
debut novel, Take it There, introduces the dynamic trio of
Brittany, Nia and Shari. The new breed of young African American
professionals who epitomize the “other” nine to
five, where urban professionals trade their proper English,
phony smiles and professional demeanor for street savvy, quick
tongued around the way vernacular and mannerisms. Will taking
it there prove to be disastrous for the girls or will it lead
them to ultimate happiness?
Brittany’s outlandish views of love and sex are entertaining
at most, but sad because there are many women out there that
think just like her. Self centered, raunchy and sometimes
obnoxiously conceited, Brittany is the token character that
you love to hate. Unfortunately, she lands in a heap of trouble
midway through the story and a softer, more human side brilliantly
shines through and finally, you begin to feel sorry for her
ignorance and relate to her misguided views of life.
Think of an African American version of Charlotte from Sex
and the City when describing Nia. Her innocence is sometimes
laughable. Nia proves to often be a voice of reason to her
friends. Astonishingly beautiful, Nia’s the only one
who doesn’t quite realize it, at first. Until she meets
a special friend while away on a business trip, Nia thinks
her life is good enough. She’d just reunited with an
ex boyfriend (who didn’t deserve a second chance), but
left Houston still fantasizing about her new friend.
Shari’s marriage would make anyone jealous. Her husband,
Dexter, is a breath of fresh air. Shari has a shaky history
of past relationships that prevents her from fully trusting
her husband. When Shari does the ultimate no-no by letting
another woman stay in her house, her downward, and sometimes
maniacal spiral of her insecurities weakens her to the point
of running home to her momma. And her husband running away
from her.
With humor, steamy sex scenes and oh so realistic situations,
the drama of Take it There is sure to entertain and hopefully
teach young women a thing or two about respecting their bodies.
It’s a great read for anyone that likes to sit back,
laugh, cry and blush at the realistic dialogue and situations.

Fade to Black
By Woody Campbell
|
Who are we?
Who decided that we were “African Americans?”
How did the world conclude that to be our designation? As
children growing up we were called, with apparent acceptance
“Colored people.” By the time the Civil
Rights Movement was ushered in by Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr., we were elevated to the respectable status of “Negro.”
In college, I saw us move to “Afro American”
and then to the preferred “Black American,”
which I thought represented the result of the efforts of slain
martyrs like Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin Luther King, who
perished so that we could be known as Black Americans. They
died so that we could move forward and share in the fruits
of our labor in America.
For many years, I have been troubled by the apparent fact
that we as Black Americans of African descent—whose
ancestors had not immigrated willingly to America—have
been unable to settle on a definitive identity.
I am unable to understand why this has not been done before.
I feel that there are thousands, if not millions of people
who feel as I do but for some reason, perhaps the fear of
expert opinion, have not demonstrated their opposition. For
all of those people let me state without hesitation that I
believe we are Black Americans of African
descent. The African American designation is by definition
and logic, a misrepresentation.

BOOK REMARKS
Book Title: Between
Goodbyes
Author: Anita
Bunkley
Release Date: December 18, 2007
Grab a sit and enjoy the ride...
Niya Londres--and her three loves--and her brother Lorenzo Londres
take readers on a lyrical journey that starts in Cuba and ends in
a lavish surprise wedding.
Readers should beware. Ms. Bunkley and the characters of "Between
Goodbyes" will take you from warm nights in Cuba to cold winters
in New York. Along the way we're introduced to Niya Lourdes a driven,
talented dancer as she realizes her dreams and fights to find "true"
love.
But don't be mistaken this is not a "love story." Every
chapter takes the reader to new heights as Ms. Bunkley carefully
reveals another level of each character. They deal with immigration
issues, drug addiction, manipulation, heartbreak and more. You'll
become invested in their success and heartbroken when life deals
someone a rotten hand.
This book is a great read. And the twists and turns end in a dramatic,
surprising fashion which left me floored. You won't regret buying
this book.

Book Title: Are
You Fascinated? The four people you need to succeed.
Author: Ken
Tucker
Release Date: February 25, 2008
Dear Reader Stop Now If…
“…deep down inside, you know that you are not living
up to your potential.”
Do you lead a life fascinated by life’s possibilities? Do
you yearn to shift your life into another direction? Yes? Then you
should read this book.
In all honesty, I briefly hesitated before responding to a request
to review the manuscript for this book. Mainly because, I rarely,
if ever, review manuscripts; however, I found the book title intriguing.
“Are You Fascinated?” As a result, I committed to reading
the introduction and the first chapter.
But after reading the introduction I became engulfed in this book
that I’ve struggled to classify. Why? Well, because Mr. Tucker’s
book carried me through a string of emotions while providing some
great life and business advice. I found myself physically moving
closer to the book as if I could somehow affect the outcome of the
stories before my eyes. Such provoking stories and life experiences
invoked a sense of urgency for action—and transformation.
Mr. Tucker then takes things a step further. He identifies the
key people needed in your life to make your transformation achievable—the
impossible possible. And he walks you through the process of giving,
or receiving, what’s needed in those relationships to bring
about fascination in your life and the lives of others.
While reading this book you’ll ask yourself, on more than
one occasion “am I fascinated?” And as you read the
last pages you’ll learn many things. But two lessons, I can
assure you will become clear:
(1) You’ll discern whether you’re fascinated—engaged
by life and those around you—and
(2) If you learn that you’re not fascinated, you’ll
have the resources to identify those four key people that are needed
to make your transformation possible.
Get engaged. Become fascinated.

DANA'S CORNER
Hello
Everyone,
Let me begin by saying “Thank You!” You are experiencing
a piece of my dream, and I hope you like it. Wait…let me back
up a bit. Since this is our first issue of Nia Newsletter
let me tell you a little story. (I promise not to hold you too
long.)
My husband and I own, and run, a website
design company. And while running this business I did some
soul searching. Trying to figure out how I could best help our clients,
since many of them wanted a website. But they failed to take strategic
steps to make their websites work for them. In response to my growing
frustration, I started Nia
Promotions.
Nia Promotions is a marketing company that assists entrepreneurs,
small businesses and authors with both online and traditional marketing.
And while creating our online offerings I thought “what if….”
That one statement—after hours of research and millions of
calls to authors, publishers, editors, bookstores and other readers—led
to the creation of Nia
Virtual Book Tours, a virtual book tour that spotlights
the works of African-American authors.
The past few months have been crazy. I’ve remained
sane due to the loving support of my husband and beautiful children.
They’re the best.
I’d also like to thank our wonderful authors that have trusted
me with their babies. Lastly, I want to convey my gratitude to everyone
that has made this all possible.
You’re invited to join us on one—or all—of our
chats. And please, please purchase the books written by our featured
authors because we want to see them hit the Essence Bestsellers
lists.
Feel free to visit this newsletter all month. Spread the word.
Stay tuned people because we have more coming. And we’d love
for you to join us.
Best regards,
Dana Pittman
