MARCH 2008

Welcome to Nia Newsletter! March is here. And unfortunately the weather in Texas is crazy as ever…yet extremely beautiful. This month we have many…many events.

First, Nia Virtual Book Tours is going strong. We have four authors cover several genres. And I can’t wait until you learn about these books. We’ll spotlight authors LaShonda DeVaughn, Tysha, Ken Tucker and Cereka Cook.

Second, in honor of Small Press month I’ve asked some industry professionals to dial in and talk about their given areas of expertise. And of course, they’ll accept your questions while giving us a healthy dose of their knowledge. So join us as Nia Promotions hosts chats with Torrian Ferguson, Tee C. Royal and Kevin Smokler.

Lastly, don’t forget to register for these events. Authors are giving away books. And our professionals are spilling the beans on the industry. But most of all I understand how life and get crazy and the little things slip our mind.

By registering we’ll send a reminder before the event to remind you. And you are entered to win the wonderful prizes given away during our calls.

I think I’ve chatted enough. I’ll leave you with a heartfelt initiation….

Join Us

Because you’re personally invited and feel free to bring a friend.

Best Wishes,

Dana Pittman

BOOK REMARKS

Book Title: Between Goodbyes
Author: Anita Bunkley
Release Date: December 18, 2007

Grab a sit and enjoy the ride...

Niya Londres--and her three loves--and her brother Lorenzo Londres take readers on a lyrical journey that starts in Cuba and ends in a lavish surprise wedding.

Readers should beware. Ms. Bunkley and the characters of "Between Goodbyes" will take you from warm nights in Cuba to cold winters in New York. Along the way we're introduced to Niya Lourdes a driven, talented dancer as she realizes her dreams and fights to find "true" love.

But don't be mistaken this is not a "love story." Every chapter takes the reader to new heights as Ms. Bunkley carefully reveals another level of each character. They deal with immigration issues, drug addiction, manipulation, heartbreak and more. You'll become invested in their success and heartbroken when life deals someone a rotten hand.

This book is a great read. And the twists and turns end in a dramatic, surprising fashion which left me floored. You won't regret buying this book.

Book Title: Are You Fascinated? The four people you need to succeed.
Author: Ken Tucker
Release Date: February 25, 2008

Dear Reader Stop Now If…

“…deep down inside, you know that you are not living up to your potential.”

Do you lead a life fascinated by life’s possibilities? Do you yearn to shift your life into another direction? Yes? Then you should read this book.

In all honesty, I briefly hesitated before responding to a request to review the manuscript for this book. Mainly because, I rarely, if ever, review manuscripts; however, I found the book title intriguing. “Are You Fascinated?” As a result, I committed to reading the introduction and the first chapter.

But after reading the introduction I became engulfed in this book that I’ve struggled to classify. Why? Well, because Mr. Tucker’s book carried me through a string of emotions while providing some great life and business advice. I found myself physically moving closer to the book as if I could somehow affect the outcome of the stories before my eyes. Such provoking stories and life experiences invoked a sense of urgency for action—and transformation.

Mr. Tucker then takes things a step further. He identifies the key people needed in your life to make your transformation achievable—the impossible possible. And he walks you through the process of giving, or receiving, what’s needed in those relationships to bring about fascination in your life and the lives of others.

While reading this book you’ll ask yourself, on more than one occasion “am I fascinated?” And as you read the last pages you’ll learn many things. But two lessons, I can assure you will become clear:

(1) You’ll discern whether you’re fascinated—engaged by life and those around you—and

(2) If you learn that you’re not fascinated, you’ll have the resources to identify those four key people that are needed to make your transformation possible.

Get engaged. Become fascinated.

BLOGGING

FORGET WHAT YOU HEARD…BLOGGING BASICS

Why would we consider discussing blogging first? Three reasons come to mind.

First, many of our clients read daily (in trade magazines, newspapers, online articles) about other businesses utilizing blogging as a method of marketing. And the same goes for authors. There are many authors that are blogging to general a buzz about their books.

Second, although blogging is really taking off many people don’t get it. But they want to. They want to understand the fascination that the world has with blogging. And they want to understand how writing in this virtual journal can benefit their business.

Lastly, I believe there are some basic things to consider before signing up to blog—whether your interests are personal or professional because blogging is no cake walk.

What this article is not?

This article is not the end all be all—i.e., I’m no expert. But I’ve been around the virtual block a time or two. Running a website development company for the past seven years has afforded me a lot of experience. But I, like you, am learning new things daily. So take this for what it’s worth.

Do you?

Use what you can and trash the rest.

What is a blog?

Blog is short for “web log”. I’d define a blog as a series of entries that contain the author’s—i.e. bloggers—thoughts, pictures, poetry, articles, etc.

A blog can be written and maintained by an individual writer or a group of writers.

It can be focused on one topic or area of expertise—or the content can vary. This content is gathered and “posted” as an entry in the blog.

For example, a marketing company may chose to start a company blog. This blog could include the individual thoughts and ideas of a single employee. Or the company could collectively house articles and written pieces from various employees.

As a result of this vast flexibility every blog can be different. You’ll find bloggers that post several entries a day. To others that post less frequently.

Who’s blogging?

Everyone. No really…everyone is blogging. Teachers, writers, consultants, authors, lawyers, mothers, runners, stay-at-home dad…(need I go on).

The list is—literally—endless.

What are they blogging about?

Everything and anything….

- I have a cold today.
- How to market your book on a budget?
- How to pick a good-running shoe?
- Life as a first-time father.

Again, the list goes on.

People are blogging about their life experiences. Others track their careers and business experiences.

Blogs are like an infinite file cabinet. You can file away thoughts is these dated entries for the world to read. And comment on.

Furthermore, what’s interesting is that the entries can be categorized by subject based on the content of each entry.

Why should I blog?

Honestly, only you can answer this question. But I’ll list a few pros and cons to help you out.

Pros

  • It’s interactive. Blogging can serve as a massive brainstorming session. You present your ideas to the world and receive feedback via comments, providing a constant connection prospective and existing readers.
  • Informative blogs demonstrate your knowledge in a given area, which attracts new visitors and/or clients.
  • It’s entertaining and fairly easy to learn.

Cons

  • It’s time consuming. Since many visitors will expect frequent updates.
  • Writing alone is not enough. To have a “successful” blog you must find ways to attract interested readers.

How do I begin?

Other than writing the content, you can start by visiting a few of the resources given below:

Blogcast – Blogging and Podcast in one place.

Blogger - A blog is your easy-to-use web site, where you can quickly post thoughts, interact with people, and more. All for free.

Entrepreneur.com Article: Should You Start a Business Blog

wikiHow Article – How to Start a Blog

WordPress – Express yourself. Start a blog.

And others…. Run a general search under “blog,” “start a blog,” etc.

Additionally, some people find ghostwriters to assist starting and maintaining a blog.

In conclusion….

This article was meant as a general overview on blogs. There is a ton of information available online about starting and maintaining a blog. Search wisely and decide what’s best for you.

Good luck!
